Nail Fungus Infections and Prevention

Nail fungus is seen more in adults and most commonly on the toe nails. Nail fungus goes in warm and moist areas, so if you enjoy swimming pools, or use gyms and shower rooms you may be more prone toe
nail fungus. Also the risk of nail fungus increases by wearing closed in footwear, minor skin or nail injuries, or even moist skin that is moist for long periods.

Symptoms to watch for if you think you may be prone to nail fungus:
Any changes in your nail usually more than one. Watch for brittle or discolored nails, this is one symptom of nail fungus. Other symptoms include loss of luster and shine, thickening, distorted nail shape, nail
crumbling nails, debris found under the nail, and if your nail becomes detached.

If you believe that you do in fact have nail fungus your doctor can check by scraping the nail for a culture. He will then examine the scrapings and then he can in fact let you know if you have nail fungus.
There are many creams and ointments that claim to cure nail fungus but most do not help. There is a new product on the market called Penlac that has helped some patients. Some oral medications may help like
Sporanox or Lamisil, these may cause several side effects. Your nails grow very slowly, so it may take up to one year for your nail to replace the old nail. But, at least the nail fungus will be gone.

Nail fungus is hard to treat and may recur so you should visit your doctor and do what he suggests in preventing the nail fungus from returning. As for complications that may occur in your nails would be; permanent damage to the nails, the nail fungus can cause a secondary infection in the skin around the nail, recurring infections of the nail or other parts of the body.

Be sure to call your doctor if the nail fungus recurs, or if the fingers or toes become red, painful or drain pus. If you want to prevent nail fungus the best way is to practice good health and hygiene habits. Remember to keep your skin around your nails clean and dry. Wash and dry your hands after you come in contact with any type of fungus or debris. Just use common sense and keep your hands clean, your nails come in contact will all kinds of dirt and grime. This will help in the prevention of nail fungus.

Nail Fungus Prevention
Bacterial and fungal infections are easily avoided by following normal sanitary precautions. In the majority of cases, the problem is caused by the nail technicians who take short cuts and omit some of the sanitation steps when performing an artificial nail service. If you are a nail technician and you find that your clients are are suffering from nail fungus infections, you should examine your procedures and application techniques to find the possible cause. Nail infections should be minimal.
